Several inventions that have changed the world have been patented by Vermonters.  Here is a partial listing of Vermont innovators and inventors that demonstrates how the creativity and genius of one person can have an ever-lasting effect on the future of mankind:

1790 – Samuel Hopkins – received the first US patent (signed by George Washington and Thomas Jefferson) for making potash.

1817 – John Copper – invented the rotary pump.

1826 – Samuel Morey – invented the first paddle wheel steamer. Morey is also credited with inventing the internal combustion engine.

1848 – Gardner S. Blodgett – invented the cast iron cooking oven.

1977 – Jake Burton Carpenter – began making snowboards in Londonderry, VT. Now Snowboarding is an international sport.

2004 – Glen DeRusha a Luthier from Bradford, Vermont – makes affordable, hand-made, all solid wood guitars for the working man.
